From World Cup Momentum to Lasting Connection – Why Seattle Convention Center Is Activating 9th Avenue

When Seattle hosted FIFA World Cup matches this summer, downtown felt energized. Streets filled with people, small businesses welcomed new customers, and neighbors, visitors, and workers shared public spaces in ways that showed what a vibrant city center can be. The energy was contagious, and it revealed something important: people are eager for opportunities to connect. Seattle Convention Center believes that momentum is worth building on.

This August, Seattle Convention Center will transform a block of 9th Avenue between Pike and Pine into a temporary pedestrian-focused gathering space designed to bring people together, support local businesses, and create new opportunities for community connection. Programming will include Market at the Marquee, a weekly evening market featuring local makers, food, music, and neighborhood experiences from 5:00–8:00 p.m. on August 6, 13, 20, and 27.

At its heart, this initiative is about placemaking: creating environments where people want to gather, linger, and engage. Thriving cities depend on vibrant public spaces that foster economic activity, strengthen community ties, and create a sense of belonging.

For downtown Seattle, the timing is meaningful. As the city continues to invest in its future, organizations across sectors are exploring how collaboration can create welcoming experiences for residents, workers, visitors, and businesses. The activation builds on the optimism generated by the World Cup and aligns with a broader vision for a more connected downtown.

“Great cities are built through connection,” said Jennifer LeMaster, President and CEO of Seattle Convention Center. “During the World Cup, we witnessed the power of shared experiences to bring people together and energize downtown Seattle. This activation is an opportunity to continue creating those moments while supporting local businesses, cultural organizations, and the people who make our city such an extraordinary place to live, work, and visit.”

The pilot also reflects an evolving view of civic leadership. For Seattle Convention Center, that means serving not only as an event venue, but as a partner invested in downtown’s long-term vitality.

The 9th Avenue activation creates opportunities for local entrepreneurs, artists, and small businesses to reach new audiences while encouraging visitors to explore the surrounding neighborhood. It also demonstrates how public-private collaboration can benefit residents, workers, cultural institutions, and hospitality partners.

While the activation is temporary, its purpose is not. It is a chance to test new ideas, strengthen community connections, and explore how downtown Seattle can continue evolving into a place where people feel welcome, inspired, and engaged.

The World Cup showed what Seattle can be when people come together. This summer, Seattle Convention Center is helping ensure that spirit does not end with the final match. It is taking one small block and asking a larger question: How can we create more opportunities for connection, belonging, and shared prosperity in the heart of our city?
