The program achieved many of those goals, but restoration of the roadway has taken longer than anticipated. The immediate issue is not the paint itself. During removal, portions of the roadway surface began to lift, creating conditions that SDOT determined must be repaired before the street can safely reopen.
We met today with SDOT, our contractor partners and other stakeholders to confirm the safest and fastest path forward. Seattle Convention Center has also offered to operate 9th Avenue as a managed street to support immediate, safe, and coordinated access while restoration is completed.
Further information about reopening 9th Avenue will be provided on this page as it becomes available.
9/19 Update
On Friday, Seattle Convention Center and SDOT agreed on a path toward reopening 9th Avenue between Pike and Pine.
The lively street mural brought color and energy to the block. It was determined however that the design would need to be changed to resume vehicular access. The goal is to preserve the spirit of the public art with a refreshed design that provides clear center lane markings and allow the street to reopen.
New concepts are underway and we expect all work to be completed within two weeks. SCC is paying for the artwork design, install and re-striping with no costs to residents or the City’s operating budget.
We appreciate your patience and will continue sharing updates here as the work progresses.
9/23 AM Update
The Seattle Convention Center will repaint pavement markings on 9th Avenue today, September 23. Work will focus on restoring traffic markings that were modified during the August street closure and will not involve repainting the entire roadway. The work will be coordinated with nearby operations, including scheduled theater logistics activity. Another update will be provided late Wednesday afternoon.
9/23 PM Update
The street is now open to traffic. We appreciate the collaboration with SDOT.
